General
- Dongle is a device used to protect applications and data against unauthorized usage and replication;
- The dongle is attached to the computers parallel or USB port;
- If functioning properly, a dongle attached to a parallel port does not interfere with printers and other peripheral devices connected to the port via this dongle.
Installing the Dongle for a Parallel Port (LPT Port)
- Power off the computer and peripheral devices connected to the parallel port (printer, scanner, etc.);
- Disconnect the peripheral device from the parallel port. If there are several parallel ports on the computer you may attach the dongle to any of those;
- Plug the male connector of the dongle into the parallel port of the computer (there is a female connector on the system unit) and tighten the screws using a screwdriver. Connection should be tight. Dongles can be connected in cascading manner, i.e. daisy-chained one into another (up to 10 units), and all of them will be available for usage;
- Plug the peripheral device into the male connector of the dongle and tighten the screws using a screwdriver;
- Turn on the computer and load the operating system;
- Install the application software following the developers' instructions;
- Reset the computer if necessary;
- Make sure that the application software is functioning properly.
Installing the Dongle for a USB Port
- Guardant USB dongles can be used in operating systems that support USB standard: MS Windows 95 OSR2/98/ME/2000/XP;
- Guardant USB dongles may be attached and removed when the computer is powered on or off;
- Install the application software following the developers' instructions;
- Install Guardant USB driver supplied with the Developer's Kit;
- Reset the computer if necessary;
- Attach Guardant USB dongle to an available USB port. If the dongle is attached before the driver has been installed, decline installation of the driver suggested by the operating system, remove the dongle and install Guardant driver;
- Make sure that the application software is functioning properly.
Dongle Operating and Storage Instructions
Applicable to Dongles of Both Types
- Protect the dongle from physical damage (fall, toss, vibration, etc.), exposure to high and low temperatures, aggressive environments, high voltage; all these may cause damage to the dongle;
- Do not press too hard when connecting the dongle to the computer, and a peripheral device to the dongle;
- Do not expose the dongle (especially its connectors) to dust, dirt, damp, etc. In case dirt gets into the dongle connectors arrange for their cleaning. Use a dry cloth to clean the case and connectors. Never use organic solvents;
- Do not disassemble the dongle. This may cause damage of the dongles case, printed wiring elements, and consequently lead to unstable functioning or failure of the hardware;
- In case of failure or improper functioning of the dongle contact the application software developer.
Applicable to LPT Dongles Only
- DO NEVER plug a powered on peripheral device to the dongle attached to the computer. This may damage not only the dongle, but also the parallel port of the computer or of the peripheral device. Peripheral device should be plugged into the computer only when the power of both the computer and of the peripheral device is off, regardless of whether the dongle is attached to the computer. It is acceptable to attach the dongle to a powered on computer only when no peripheral devices are used;
- It is not recommended that connection to and disconnection of the dongle from the parallel port of a computer are repeated many times. This may lead to wearing down of connectors and to contact loosening;
- Usage of cables and auxiliary devices (automatic and manual switches, etc.) that do not conform to the international standards on parallel interfaces (Centronics, Bitronics, IEEE 1284) may cause malfunction of any peripheral devices, including dongles attached to a computers parallel port. If the devices and cables used with a computer conform to the above-mentioned standards, stable functioning is guaranteed in case the summary length of interface cables does not exceed 1,8 m. Cables and devices should bear appropriate marking;
